A portrait of Fannie Lou Hamer for “19th Amendment: 2020 vision” exhibition.

As someone who is critical of the 19th amendment and the ways we’ve come to celebrate it, I felt it important to be a part of this exhibition. I see my practice as an artist as an opportunity for knowledge sharing and to create visuals that uplift narratives often written out of history.

Fannie Lou Hamer is a major inspiration for me. Equally as valuable as her work for voter access, the way she unabashedly showed up and embodied liberation for all is extraordinary. May her work in freedom farming, freedom schools, and the ways she captivated audiences with her voice continue to inspire us. As Fannie Lou Hamer said, “Nobody’s free until everybody’s free”.
